of the icy rain and helped them to keep their footing. Whenever lightning flashed or thunder crashed D.J. flinched, but she kept on running. If Chris hadn't known better, he would have thought she feared the storm. But that couldn't beD.J. feared nothing.
They had a head start on Halloran's hoods, but Chris could hear them crashing through the brush somewhere behind. A gunshot echoed and a bullet sliced through the trees above them, far enough away to show that their pursuers shot in vain.
"Where are we going?" he asked.
"Shut up and run, McCall. Rich knows these woods almost as well as I do. If we didn't have this storm to help, he'd be on us, and from the sound of things we'd be dead."
They continued to run for another fifteen minutes. The sounds behind them faded and stopped. D.J. had begun to tire, favoring her shoulder as she ran.
"Stop, D.J. Just for a minute. You've got to rest."
"No. We're almost there. If I can just find the right path, we'll be safe." She continued to jog, her head moving back and forth as she searched in the dense brush for the path she'd mentioned.
"If Rich knows the woods as well as you, won't he find us?"
She stopped and bent down, focusing her gaze on the overgrown ground. "I said he knows them almost as well. Almost. There's a back way to town. A pathlittle more than a deer trail, really. It'll take a while and it won't be easy, but we'll come out right behind Danny's house. He and I used the trail
